What is Accessibility?

Accessibility is shaped by how people interact with environments, systems, and expectations.

The way a space, service, activity, routine, or system is designed can either create barriers or provide the supports people need to participate.

Functional Link looks at how these factors work together and identifies practical changes that make everyday experiences easier to access, navigate, use, and participate in.

Accessibility is not only about whether a person can enter a space, qualify for a service, or receive support.

It is about whether they can understand, engage, contribute, make choices, and take part in ways that work for them.

ADA COMPLIANT ≠ ACCESSIBLE

Compliance sets the baseline. Public spaces, organizations, & events might be considered "fully accessible" by legal standards, but still be difficult to understand or use.

Accessible ≠ usable

Accessibility asks a different question: Can people actually get where they need to go, understand what is happening, use what is available, and participate in a meaningful way?

Usable ≠ inclusive

Inclusion makes participation possible. When access is built in from the start, people can participate and belong without being singled out, separated, or treated as an exception.
